Planning Solar for New-Home Construction
Solar is easier to coordinate when it is part of the building conversation early. Whether you are planning a tract-home development or a custom build, bring the builder, homeowner and solar team together before key roof and electrical decisions are finalized.
Start with the plans
Share the current roof layout and electrical plans through a method agreed with your project team. Discuss usable roof space, likely shading and the homeowner's energy goals. Plans change during construction, so confirm which revision everyone is using.
Discuss battery storage early
If backup power is a priority, discuss the circuits the homeowner wants to support. Battery sizing, electrical layout and equipment placement need project-specific review. Solar alone should not be assumed to power a home during an outage.
Coordinate construction milestones
Agree on who will communicate site readiness, schedule changes and access requirements. For developments, discuss whether a repeatable approach is appropriate across homes while allowing for differences in roof layout and homeowner needs.
Keep paperwork current
Confirm the documents needed for builder onboarding, including current insurance certificates. Keep plan revisions and project decisions organized, and share customer information only with the people who need it.
Make the homeowner handoff clear
Before closing out the solar project, clarify system activation, available monitoring, project paperwork and the local contact for questions or service. Utility approval and activation timing should be confirmed for each project rather than assumed to match the home's construction schedule.
